FAQ: House of Bauer Bavarian Mints

A Reader Asks: “Do they still make Bavarian mints by House of Bauer? They are my favorite and I can’t find them.” Believe it or not, the Bavarian Mint Meltaway from House of Bauer is the single product I get the most questions about. And, you’re in luck as they have recently gone back into production.

The history of House of Bauer is quite complicated, and the short version is that the original owners sold the company many years ago to a company that eventually went out of business. The assets of that company were recently bought out of receivership by a chocolate manufacturer located, believe it or not, on Staten Island. After a protracted legal wrangle over the ownership of the trademarks and some challenges getting acceptable packaging, the meltaways are back in production in four different flavors (plain dark, plain milk, mint, hazelnut).

I received a sample case recently and gave them away as samples at a non-profit fundraiser I attended. They were generally very well liked. I got the chance to taste them and they were as I remembered them from my childhood. I sent a box to my father (who was the person who introduced me to them when I was about eight years old), and he says that although the taste may be the same, the pieces are much larger than he (or I) remember. So, there’s a textural difference because of the size. Otherwise they taste exactly as I remember.

Because they are relatively newly in production, they are not yet in wide distribution and the good news is that they are relatively inexpensive. When things get a little cooler after Labor Day we will be offering sampler sets through The Chocolate Co-Op. Stay Tuned!

  3. It turns out that you're not alone in your interest in wondering what ever happened to Fudgetown cookies. A quick bit of research on the 'net shows that there are a surprsing number of people asking exactly the same question. I, too, remember Fudgetown cookies (here is a link to a picture I found of the Fudgetown box from the 1960s:http://www.theimaginaryworld.com/fudgetown02.jpg from growing up in Southern California. They were one of my all-time favorites, too. According to what I can find out, Burry's was the originator of the cookie and eventually (how is not clear) Keebler acquired the rights to make them. According to HomeTownFavorites.com (a site that specializes in the topic of regional favorite foods, they have confirmed that Fudgetown cookies are no longer in production. The only thing I can suggest is to visit the Keebler site and send in a request. Sorry I can't give you any better news on their availability. :Clay

  4. About fudgetown cookies, wonderful cookies six cookies in a package , with six packs in a box. Well if I remember a company caled Salerno took over production of the cookies. 25 years years ago in Germany I saw fudgetown in a Germany food store. I regret not buying 20 boxes, but I think Keebler's fudge cookies is the newer version on fudgetown today.

  6. Tracy:: Search for "raw cocoa beans" in a search engine and you should be able to find something. You can also try http://www.chocolatealchemy.com (click on the products link). If you can wait until the end of March, I may be offering some high quality beans from Ecuador. ::Clay

  9. I ordered the Bavarian Mints from the Vermont Country Store and was very excited to receive them because I, too, have looked all over for them. I was somewhat disappointed when I tasted them because I don't think the mint flavor is as delicate as it was in the real original ones and the chocolate doesn't seem as "silky". They are bigger than the originals although I'm not sure if that's what makes the texture different. I ordered a couple of boxes for a friend who is also crazy about them, but I don't think I would order them for myself again because they just aren't the same.

  14. In December,I put together a documentory brochure about my father's association with Ray Bauer and his eventual purchase of The House of Bauer Candy Company in Lincoln, Nebraska. His name was H.L. Harrison. Using only photocopied newspaper clippings from the Lincoln Journal-Star, my brochure tells The House of Bauer story. I sent one of these brochures to each of my sisters, nieces and nephews and my own children and grandchildren as Christmas gifts along with boxes of the Bavarian Mints I'd purchased at a local Walgreen's store.

  15. To Jan Strange..what a nice gift for your family. I wish I could have read your brochure. Was your father H.L. Harrison? I was born in Lincoln and lived there until the late 50's. Every Christmas each of us received a small box of Bavarian Mints to call our own and it was the ultimate treat.

  16. To Nan: I'm glad you enjoyed the Bavarian Mints. The ones made now aren't as creamy or as small as the originals unfortunately, but it's a bit of nostalgia that's enjoyable. So you are a transplanted Lincolnite. How about that! Go Huskers!

  17. I was delighted to find this site some time ago although then I learned that Bavarian Mints were unavailable. I have mixed feelings about them being back in production. The silky texture is so vivid to me, and I'm afraid I'd be disappointed with anything less. I grew up in Omaha NE and my mom and I always gave/got a box for birthdays. Sigh.

  18. To Jan Strange and dj: Yes, transplanted but still wearing red sweatshirts in the fall to give a boost to my favorite team!! I have to say I do notice a big difference between the old and the new Bavarian mints and I was disappointed. I don't know how they can say "the original" when they aren't as silky smooth as the old ones (that really WAS an important part of their goodness) and the mint flavor isn't as delicate...it's like the flavor of a Peppermint Patty. Evidently those of us who spent our childhood in Lincoln/Omaha have a special place in our hearts for Bavarian Mints from the House of Bauer!! (By the way,the new box isn't as wonderful as the old one either.....it doesn't have a top and bottom, you tear open the end and slide out the plastic form that holds the pieces.) Change is good but some things should stay the same.......like H of B Bavarian Mints!!!

  19. To Nan and dj: Last night, my husband and I broke open a new House of Bauer box of candy from our stash. The box is different from the Bavarian Mints. It reads "The Original Bavarian" and then, up in the righthand corner it says: "Milk Chocolate Meltaways". (no "mints" to be found on the box) We were pleasantly surprised to find these meltaways much, much creamier and smaller (more like the originals) and we thought we'd finally found what we'd hoped for. Hope you can find these and enjoy them, too. Jan Strange

  20. Janice- Wow! I think you've got it. I remember the word "meltaways" being on the original box. I will definitely be trying that version!!!! Aren't we lucky this blog exists?

  21. I don't know what Mr. Gordon would think about this, but I'll try it and see.
Is anyone interested in sharing REALLY GOOD chocolate recipes.
I found a REALLY GOOD recipe for Chocolate Truffles (candy) at Christmas time and
would be willing to share it. If you like meltaways, you'll love this one.
Let's get this blog going with something important (instead of politics)like FOOD.
Let me know, and I'll put the recipe on this website.

  22. June 2006 I too grew up with the wonderful House of Bauer Bavarian Mints. I found this FAQ because a co-worker just today came back from Chicago with a box of "Frango Chicago Mint Chocolates". These reminded me so much of the Bavarian Mints that I had to do an internet search. Give the Frango Mints a try...they are sold throught Marshall Fields, but a quick check of their site shows several different types of mints - not like the 16 oz box that I hold in my hand...They are mfg'd by Gertrude Hawk Chocolates Inc. of Dunmore PA and copyrighted by The May Departments Stores Company 2005..........

  23. Whatever happened to the candy stores, Blum's of San Francisco? I had the best job for the chocoholic in me when I managed one of their stores here in Colorado! That was 26 years ago! There were 3 stores here in Colorado and numerous others in other states. As I recall, they had warehouses and corporate offices both in California and Nebraska. I sure would love to find out what happened to them. They sure gave me some happy memories!

  24. For many years I gave my wife a box of Bavarian mints by House of Bauer for Christmas. I ususally bought them at her uncle's drugstore in Beatrice, NE. Of course I have not found them in recent years. I read your August '04 FAQ indicating they would again be available. Are they and where would one purchase them? Bob Frasier

  25. I do hand made truffles in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Sometimes, a dry sugarlike white substance "sweats" from my truffles. Do you know why this happens, and how I can avoid this from happening? Also I would like to know web site address either in USA or Mexico that sells packaging and wrapping material for chocolates. Many thanks for your assistance. I do not have a local source where to get this kind of information. Susana de Monteverde
