Tuesday, July 13, 2004 Question: Nut-Free Chocolate (?) A Reader Writes: “Would you happen to know of chocolate manufacturers that manufacture nut-free chocolates? My daughter has a nut allergy, and it has become so difficult to find chocolate that doesn’t have the disclaimer of ‘manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts’.” Nut allergies affect many people and I am surprised at how few companies are addressing this issue - which is far more dangerous ... ... to the afflicted than a diabetic accidentally biting into a piece of chocolate made with sugar. One company I know that specializes in Vegan/Vegetarian and similar items did not take the (obvious to me) next step of working in a plant that is certified nut free. I don’t have an easy answer for you. I need to do a little more research among a couple of companies to make sure that I don’t give you the wrong information. In the meantime, can you tell me if the nut allergies include nuts other than peanuts? In general, European chocolate companies don’t use peanuts so you should be pretty safe there. But if the sensitivity to nuts includes almonds, hazelnuts, and/or pistachios, then that narrows the possibilities considerably.
