Sunday, July 04, 2004 Question: What About See's Chocolate? A reader writes: “I don’t see See’s Chocolates mentioned. Why not? I consider them among the best and reasonably priced and they have stores all over the country.” See’s fits into the Mass Market Premium category in terms of price (between $15 and $25/pound) and produces work in the traditional American (bold unmistable flavors, mostly enrobed) style. See’s is a very dependable product—a big step up from mass market chocolate costing just a few dollars less per pound. If you compare the ingredients labels between See’s and the “core” Godiva line (the chocolates you can buy both in the boutiques and in other retail outlets), you’ll notice that See’s has a far superior ingredients list than Godiva for about half the price. Why isn’t there a formal review for See’s? Well, I still haven’t moved all the content over from the old site to this one is one reason, and another is that there are over 3000 chocolatiers (conservatively speaking) in North America and while I am very aware of See’s (I grew up in Southern California and Victoria English Toffee was a family favorite growing up), my initial focus on reviews and ratings has been products in the Gourmet and Prestige categories, not Mass Market Premium chocolatiers. While See’s is easy to find in many parts of the country, New York is not one of them. The next time I see a box I will buy it and make to review them.
